Gardening

North Downs Primary School has achieved the RHS Level 4 Award and, in recognition of this, we receive plug plants from the RHS which are shared amongst all year groups; our children are responsible for the planting, care and harvesting of these crops. We are currently working towards the RHS Level 5 Award and look forward to working with our local community to achieve this through the development of our Sensory Garden.

Our local community plays a vital role in supporting Learning Outside the Classroom and we are extremely fortunate to have formed positive relationships with a number of local organisations, including BERT, Brockham Village Eco Club, Betchworth Parish Council and Brockham Green Nursery. It is through these relationships that we are able to enrich our learning curriculum with activities including visits to the school’s off-site allotment. In collaboration with volunteers from the local community, and in partnership with parent helpers, children work to prepare, plant, maintain and harvest a variety of fruit and vegetables. Children from our Reception class in Brockham particularly enjoy the excitement of visiting the allotment and show awe and wonder as they observe the changes that take place over time. Skills are progressively developed and these experiences provide valuable enhancements to cross curricular learning taking place in the classroom.
